Although coin collecting hasn't been around that long, it's still a popular hobby for anyone interested in history and owning potentially valuable items. To know the history and value of an old coin, you need to be able to identify it, which can be difficult for new coin collectors. Coin IQ is designed to help you identify old coins that you may find.

Three Important Steps

Search for a denomination

If the coin has a face value, it is most likely a coin. If the coin has no face value, it is possibly a medallion.

Search a date

Before collecting coins, it is important to learn basic coin terminology, such as the components of a coin and the different images.

Color size pictures

Coin IQ practices that knowing the diameter and thickness of a coin can help identify it, with the diameter being the more reliable indicator. The color of a coin can be an indication of the metal it is made of. A gold color can indicate that the coin is made of gold, a silver color can indicate that the coin is made of silver, and a brown color can indicate that the coin is made of copper. If you are able to identify the person, animal, or other image depicted on a coin, you can identify the country of origin and get an indication of the coin's age.
